supermodels

The glitz and glamour of being a model do not come easily. Rather, they work hard to be at the top since competition in the fashion industry is indeed very high. Famous fashion designers prefer celebrities to endorse their line of clothes or fashion other accessories. In the 1960’s, when models were yet starting to strut the runway, they were only used to present the beauty of the clothes they wear. They were mere faces and images to the public, until such time came when they started having real characters beyond the catwalk. They were then made to endorse diet colas, trucks and various products that do not have to do with fashion, complete with their faces and names. This prompted the “shot to fame” phenomenon, making super models into super stars at the same time.

Many claim to have first started using the term “super model”. Most of them are writers or authors that have wrote about modelling early on. However, it gained recognition in popular culture at the start of 1980’s and 1990’s. Supermodels represent popular fashion labels and their campaigns. Their talent fees amount to million dollar contracts with known modelling agencies. Being a supermodel means being known by every individual in just one look. This is also because supermodels cover almost every popular magazine in the world.

Today, famous fashion models endorsing the most number of brands or products can also be referred to as “supermodels”. However, the history of fashion industry acknowledges only six supermodels of all time known collectively as the “Big Six”. They are:

  1. Naomi Campbell
  2. Cindy Crawford
  3. Linda Evangelista
  4. Kate Moss
  5. Claudia Schiffer
  6. Christy Turlington

This is because they have been heavily in demand- dominating magazine covers, fashion runways and the advertising media during their time. Among the Big Six, Kate Moss is yet the only one not referred to as the “original supermodels”.

Hence, the first category is all about the “Popular European Supermodels” and second category will give information on the “Popular American Supermodels”. Since a supermodel would certainly be popular all over the world regardless of nationality or origin, I have decided to list models with European origin and from those that with American roots which will be under second category.
